statementSelf-expression through both visual and performing
arts has always played a significant role in my life. When I was
younger, growing up in Houston, Texas, my parents always pushed me
to utilize my artistic talents. It was not until I started school at
Kenyon College that I stopped taking my talent for granted and
started enjoying making art.
Through the exploration of what I am visually attracted to, coupled
with the interpretation of my own art, I have come to the
realization that the world around us is never standing still. Even
when there is stillness, there is never a static moment. A seemingly
motionless moment is only a brief reference point in the endless
development and energy of nature's movement. Through my oil
paintings, I attempt to transform the canvas into a surreal
environment or atmosphere for which this idea of continuous
evolution and activity exists.
Fabric is the reoccurring material used as the central subject
matter of my pieces. With a fluid quality that implies a sense of
constant movement and metamorphosis, the folds unceasingly suggest
something familiar and recognizable, but they never remain still as
definite objects. This subject continues its excursion of growth and
change through the presence of a viewer, provoking different
interpretations from each individual.
My paintings attempt to present a passage of unsuspected reality
through the fantastical. The surreal combination of colors and
images produce never-seen-before environments and provoke reactions
related to subconscious experience, subsequently conveying a sense
of familiarity. My work illustrates and exaggerates the constant
movement and metamorphoses taking place in the world around us, that
our conscious minds often take for granted. |
